Build Description

ABOUT

This is the superior Machine gunner build that deals big, fast damage, with excellent energy management. If you've been wasting your time using Marksman's Wager for energy management, then this build is for you. Try this build on a suit of 100 Armor on Isle of the Nameless and compare the power to your other ranger builds.

EQUIPMENT

You'll need 2 bows.

  1. A Zealous, 15^50, Hornbow of Fortitude. (Energy Management)
  2. A Vampiric, 15^50, Hornbow of Fortitude. (Damage)
  3. (Between fights, switch to a 3rd bow with no special mods to hasten health and energy regeneration)
(Remember to personalize your weapons for an additional 20% damage increase.)

Radiant insignias are recommended.

USAGE

Set up Favorable Winds and Read the Wind. Pick a Target. Equip your Vampiric Hornbow - this will be your primary damage dealing weapon. Open up with Needling Shot, and follow by spamming Quick Shot each second. Throw in a Savage shot whenever you like to interrupt heals and add damage. When the foe is at half health, spam Needling shot (which will recharge instantly) and Quick shot one after another. This is the machine gunning that quickly puts a foe down. Interrupt and disable healing attempts. If you are uncomfortable with your energy level, switch to your Zealous Hornbow.

VARIANTS

Replace Distracting Shot with Dual Shot. Use Dual shot > Needling Shot > Quick Shot as your opening attack sequence. This is generally considered cumbersome and unnecessary, but some players prefer it.

For PVP: Replace Favorable Winds with something defensive or remedial: An expertise-based run stance, Throw Dirt, Pin Down, Antidote Signet or, for Monk secondaries, Mending Touch - are all good choices.

WHERE DOES ALL THIS DAMAGE COME FROM!?

It comes from several places:

  1. Your Spirit and preparations. Favorable Winds adds 6 armor ignoring damage. Read the Wind adds another 10 armor ignoring damage.
  2. Your Bow. A Hornbow has an inherent 10% Armor Penetration. Your Vampiric String adds another 5 armor ignoring damage per hit. Additionally, your bow should be customized for another 20% damage.
  3. Your Marksmanship. 16 points in Marksmanship greatly increases your chance to make a critical attack. With the speed of your machine gunning attack rate, you will inflict several critical hits.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT

At 13 Expertise your two primary attacks, Quick Shot and Needling Shot, are reduced to a measly 2 energy each. With a Zealous weapon, the net cost of your striking attacks is, amazingly, 1 energy each.
